In Memory
Gary Frank Beringause 1945-1986
It is said by many that Gary Beringause never met a stranger. He was one of Tech's most loved and respected police officers and was well known for never turning away a student who asked for his help.
Sergeant Beringause was born in Atlanta on May 19, 1945. He was a graduate of Roosevelt High School and the Georgia Police Academy. Prior to joining the Georgia Tech Police, he held positions with the Lockheed Corporation, the Marietta Police Department and Piedmont Hospital. He began his fourteen year career at Tech in 1972 and was promoted to Corporal in 1974 and to Sergeant three months later. In 1979, he became supervisor of the Parking Control Unit.
In addition to his regular police duties, Sergeant Beringause was head of road security for all athletic events and worked security for summer baseball and basketball camps. An emergency medical technician, he also taught first aid and CPR classes both on and off campus.
Sergeant Beringause was very active with his three sons and the youths in his community. For many years, he coached baseball and basketball at the Shaw Recreation Club, where he was a former member of the board of directors. He was also a member of the Peace Corps and the American Red Cross.
Known affectionately as "Sarge" by Tech students, Gary will long be remembered for his dedicated service to the Georgia Tech community, his friendly smile, and his insatiable willingness to help others. Gary served the Georgia Tech Police Department with distinction and although he is no longer with us, we will never forget him or his family.
